Cedar Battens for Privacy Screens, Slat Walls and Joinery

Building a privacy screen, battening a slat ceiling, or making up shelves and window sills? Western red cedar battens and dressed all round (DAR) boards come planed on all four faces, ready to fix and finish. We stock 26 sizes from 12×12 to 290×40, across 12, 18, 30 and 40mm thicknesses.

Batten Sizes for Screens and Slat Walls

For screens, gates and slat walls, the popular sections are 40×18, 67×18 and 90×18, with 30×18, 40×30 and 40×40 for a chunkier line. The small sections, 12×12, 18×18 and 40×12, suit fine slat detailing, beads and infill work.

Wide Boards for Shelving, Sills and Facings

Need a wider face? Our 18mm boards run 116, 140, 190, 240 and 290mm wide for shelving, facings and window sills. For heavier work, the 30 and 40mm boards go up to 290×30 and 290×40.

Fixing and Finishing Cedar DAR

Fix cedar with stainless steel or hot-dip galvanised timber screws, as plain steel can stain the timber. Finish the edges with matching cedar mouldings, and use our timber cut to size service when you need exact lengths for a screen or joinery run. For the full range, including lining boards, see all western red cedar timber.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does DAR mean in timber?

DAR stands for dressed all round. All four faces of the timber are planed smooth, giving a clean, square section ready to fix and finish without further dressing.

What size battens are used for a privacy screen?

Common cedar screen battens are 40×18, 67×18 and 90×18. The gap you leave between battens sets how much privacy and airflow the screen gives.

Is cedar good for outdoor screens?

Yes. Western red cedar has natural durability against decay above ground, is light to handle, and stays straight, which makes it a common choice for screens and gates.

Do cedar battens need to be oiled?

No, but oiling or staining keeps the red-brown colour. Left unfinished, cedar weathers to an even silver-grey.
