An important thing to understand about oxide powders such as iron oxide is that it is a pigment. In other words, it is a crystallised powder, not a dye or a paint. This means that it can only add colour to a final product if it is added to the actual cement or premix.

The best part about oxide powders is that they’re relatively easy to use. Simply add oxide at a rate of around 5% of the cement component (for example, 50 g of oxide to 10 kg of cement). A lower concentration will create a paler tint, while a higher concentration will create a darker one. But it is important not to add too much oxide, as it can have an impact on the quality and durability of your cement.

Different oxides can be mixed to achieve different colours; however, you may need to experiment with small batches in order to work out the exact concentration of each oxide that you need. Oxides can be added to concrete, mortar, grout and render, and some recommended uses include coloured bricks or blocks of concrete, coloured pond coatings, cement floors, cementitious paints, coloured plaster, decorative screeds and other decorative concrete items such as moulded ornaments or sculptures.
